This work is the portrait of an actor from Kabuki, the traditional Japanese theater. Contrary to appearances, it is not a woman who is represented but a man. Indeed, Kabuki were initially played by women who prostituted themselves. For moral reasons and good manners, it was decided in the 17th century to entrust the female roles to men called Onnagata.
