Mr. Singh
Oil on canvas – 100 x 80 cm
At the origin of this portrait, there is an Indian face that caught my attention: an expression, a look, a presence.
Mr. Singh is an ordinary man, but the nobility of his features, the pride in his gaze, and the elegance of his beard immediately reminded me of a Maharaja. Through the act of painting, I imagined this man in another world, that of the grand princely courts of India. To achieve this, I immersed myself in books devoted to the jewelry of the Maharajas, royal regalia, precious fabrics, and portraits of high-ranking Indian dignitaries wearing their ceremonial vestments. Dozens of reference images—historical portraits, Indian faces, traditional costumes, jewelry, and details of state—nourished this creation. After 35 years dedicated to painting, it is through mastery of drawing, light, materials, and colors that I was able to assemble these elements coherently to give birth to an original character, poised between reality and imagination. Mr. Singh is thus the encounter between a real face, an artistic exploration, and the freedom of pictorial creation.
